Endodontic treatment is also called root canal therapy. A qualified dentist does this. The outermost layer of the tooth is called the enamel. The one inner to it is the dentine. The one inner to this is the pulp cavity. This is full of nerves, blood vessels, and cellular matter. During the root canal treatment, this cavity is cleared up of the mass inside it. It is then disinfected. After this, a material called gutta-percha is inserted into the cavity. This is then sealed off from the outside environment with cement. A dental cap or crown may be placed atop the tooth or teeth.

Oral hygiene to be maintained after root canal treatment is a must. For this, a person should brush his or her teeth twice daily for at least two minutes each. Also, regular dental flossing should be done. Also, the teeth must be shown to the dentist regularly for any follow-up treatment, if required.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants require teeth extraction. After this, a titanium screw is placed inside the jaw bone. The bone naturally grows around the tooth and becomes firm in place after three to four months. A dental crown or cap may be placed atop the screw after this. This is how the world sees the tooth. Dental implants can last for the entire duration of the lifetime of a person if they are cared for properly. Good oral hygiene must be maintained. Also periodically the implants must be checked up by the dentist for any adjustment to be made to them.

What are dentures?

Dentures are a set of false teeth. For these, the teeth are required to be removed. Before this, an impression of these is taken along with that of the gums and sent to the dental laboratory. Here, the dentures are manufactured. These are sent back to the dentist who places them atop the gums to check for their fit. If they fit properly, the patient can take them home. Dentures need to be replaced after every five to seven years since they can become loose or ill-fitting with time. Also, they cannot be worn at night. They have to be removed and placed in a jar full of cleaning liquid to which a cleaning tablet has been added. The dentures are brushed with this cleansing liquid as well. Dentures need to be shown to the dentist for periodic cleaning for any build of plaque et al. which may spoil them. However, a lot of care has to be taken while wearing them. A person should not laugh too loudly as they may slip out of the mouth with such activity. Also, a person should not bite or chew very hard or sticky foods as this may cause the dentures to break or just to snap up.
