Gum disease is a major cause of tooth loss in most Americans. The condition begins with gingivitis, which progresses into periodontal disease when left untreated. Periodontal disease is a condition that leads to bone loss, gum detachment, gum recession and tooth mobility issues.
Symptoms of gum disease include:
- Bleeding gums
- Bad breath
- Visible tartar buildup
- Tender gums
- Gum recession
- Detached gums
- Bone loss around the teeth
- Loose teeth
- Food packing between teeth
- Gums that are swollen, red, or purplish in color
Active Gum Disease: A cause of systemic health problems
The inflammation caused by gum disease strains the body’s immune system, thereby hampering its ability to combat other diseases. The bacteria in the periodontal pockets can dislodge and spread throughout the body by entering the circulatory system. The more advanced the periodontal disease, the more severe and uncontrollable the systemic condition is likely to be, and vice versa. Therapeutic treatment for gum disease will help strengthen the body’s immune system as it combats other conditions.
Diseases directly linked with periodontal disease include:
- Heart attack
- High blood pressure
- Erectile dysfunction
- Low birth weight infants
- Premature labor
Periodontal Therapy at Sunny Isles Dental
At Sunny Isles Dental, the first step towards treatment of periodontal disease is to take you through periodontal screening. This helps in the assessment of the health and attachment levels of bone and gum tissue.
Our doctors will take you through clinical examination; periodontal exam and X-rays to ensure that therapy can be begun at the earliest. If the disease is at an advanced stage, we still get rid of it and all bacteria associated with it by the use of therapeutic services.
Arestin is a locally delivered antibiotic capsule that helps fight the precise area where advanced gum disease is taking place. Typically, Arestin is placed in the areas where bone loss is most significant, as it helps take other therapeutic methods to the next level, where gum reattachment is possible.
Each dose is delivered with an applicator that places the Arestin capsule into the bottom of the pocket. Once placed, it begins releasing micro capsules of antibiotic over a 10-14 day period. The advantage of Arestin over other types of medications is that it penetrates the deepest area of the disease. Other types of prescriptions are delivered topically, may not reach the bottom of pockets, and can also cause enamel staining.
After completing Arestin treatments, patients can generally expect healthier pocket depths and tissue reattachment in the treated area. That’s what makes it an effective part of the comprehensive periodontal plan we provide to patients at Sunny Isles Dental.
When gum disease is present, loose plaque and calcified tartar are deposited along the roots of the teeth and deep under the margins of the gums inside of what is called a “periodontal pocket.” Normal preventive cleanings focus on marginal bacteria and tartar above the gumlines, but deep deposits cause bone loss and more tissue detachment so they must be removed as well. Therapeutic scaling and root planing (also called “deep cleanings”) allow our hygienists to remove these deposits so that gum disease can be eliminated.
We use ultrasonic instrumentation technology to remove bacteria from the periodontal pocket, since it is a comfortable and highly effective way. The thousands of vibrations that occur in the smooth instrument tip cause tartar deposits to dislodge off of the tooth. This type of instrumentation is also more comfortable and effective than traditional manual hand scaling. Most of the time the cleanings will be completed one quadrant of the mouth at a time, with 1-2 quadrants per appointment. More quadrants may be completed if local anesthetic is not needed, and the disease is less advanced. After a full mouth cleaning has been performed, the patient will need to have routine maintenance treatments to prevent the disease from recurring.
Your Comfort first
To ensure your comfort while undergoing treatment for periodontal disease, we provide nitrous oxide and local anaesthetics during deep cleaning. In addition, full-mouth SCRP treatment can be done under oral conscious sedation.
Deep cleaning procedure is just the beginning of periodontal disease treatment. We ensure proper maintenance of deep periodontal pockets to prevent redeveloping and reverse inflammatory conditions of bacterial deposits.
Personalised maintenance plans and therapeutic cleaning
At Sunny Isles Dental, we assist each of our patients in getting a personalized oral care plan that will best suit them according to the area of infection. In addition, we also assist them in planning home care methods that are important to plague removal.
For most patients, we recommend a therapeutic periodontal maintenance cleaning as frequently as every 3 to 4 months. This prevents the disease from recurring when proper home maintenance is practiced, and allows healthy tissue to reattach to the root surface. As pocket depths are lessened, maintenance visits can be spread out further and further apart, hopefully once again reaching regular recall visits every 6 months.
